Vaginal health is something that should be taken very seriously. However, with so many buzzwords and information coming from multiple sources, it can be hard to determine what products you should actually use for good sexual health. One topic we have recently seen an increase in questions about is condoms and whether or not they are vagina-friendly. In this blog, we will discuss how condoms are tested, ingredients that are used to make them, and their effects on your body’s sexual health.

Key Takeaways (TL;DR) Condoms for Vaginal Health

  • Condoms are heavily regulated by the FDA, meaning that they go through rigorous testing to be FDA cleared.

  • This basically means that no condom on its own is “more safe” for vaginal health than another.

  • However, additives like spermicides and flavors can lead to disruptions in pH and irritation to the vaginal microbiome.

  • When looking for a condom consider allergies, sensitivities, and additives to help you choose the best condom for your sexual encounters.

  • Pro tip: Add some pH-friendly or pH-neutral lube to your condoms to reduce friction and increase pleasure, while maintaining your vagina’s pH balance ;)

What are Condoms That are Vagina-Friendly?

“Vagina-friendly” is a broader marketing term that often describes condoms that have body-friendly ingredients, and that meet requirements by the FDA to show they are safe for vaginal use and bodily contact. Since condoms are classified as a medical device under the FDA, they are heavily regulated and go through rigorous testing. To be FDA cleared for vaginal use, condoms must all meet the various testing and compliance standards. Therefore, there’s no condom by itself that would be considered “more safe” for vaginal use than another condom. There are, however, additives and ingredients that could cause pH imbalances, allergic reactions, etc., which we’ll dive into. All ONE® Condoms are FDA-cleared, safe for vaginal use, and use medical-grade and body-safe ingredients.

We don’t stop there! At ONE® Condoms, all of our condoms are vegan-friendly and triple tested for safety. They are made without GMOs, harmful chemicals, gluten, parabens, toxins, bleach, sugars, spermicide, glycerin, propylene glycol, sulfates, hormones, oils, phthalates. ONE® Condoms are safe for vaginal use, and we are proud to be the first and only brand FDA cleared for anal use as well. This doesn’t mean that other condoms cannot be used for anal sex, but it does mean that we are the brand with the science to back it up for our condoms. Next time you use ONE® Condoms you can rest assured, knowing that you are using condoms that are both vagina and anal-friendly. Learn more how ONE® became Butt Stuff Approved™

Can Condoms Disrupt Vaginal/Anal Health?

In short: Condoms themselves do not disrupt your sexual health. Because condoms act as a barrier between you and a partner/toy, they are actually great for your sexual health. By using a condom, you are not coming into contact with someone’s genitals, semen, or vaginal fluids that can disrupt your microbiome.

Disclaimer: Some folks are allergic to the latex itself, so in this instance make sure to use a condom material that is suitable for your allergies to maintain good sexual health and avoid irritation or worse reactions. Alternate condom materials include nitrile, polyisoprene, and polyurethane. Some people can also be allergic to the lubricant on condoms; in this case, use a non-lubricated condom and apply your own lubricant.

When purchasing a new sexual health product, like condoms, it is important to take a look at the ingredients or additives. Sometimes condoms have other substances applied to them like spermicides or flavors that can disrupt the natural vaginal microbiome. We will dive into those topics and how they affect vaginal and anal health below.

What are Spermicides?

Spermicide is a topical method of birth control that can come in a variety of forms, including on condoms, used to block and destroy sperm cells, before they can fertilize an egg. They are around 79% effective, so it is often recommended to layer your protection with condoms or another form of pregnancy prevention to increase protection. But, what does this mean for vaginal health? One of the ingredients in spermicide is Nonoxynol-9, which is what kills the sperm. While it is generally safe to use spermicides, they can irritate vaginal tissue, and this irritation can lead to an increased risk of STIs or pH imbalances. Basically, condoms with spermicides may be the cause for irritation or vaginal complaints; it’s not the condom itself but the spermicides applied. When purchasing condoms keep this in mind if you are prone to pH imbalances or have sensitive skin. ONE® Condoms do not contain spermicides.

Are Flavored Condoms Safe for Sex?

Yes. Finally, with ONE® Condoms FlavorWaves®, flavored condoms are great for both oral sex and penetrative sex! Other brands with flavored condoms may have sugars or sweeteners that impact pH levels for some people. When using a flavored condom, you can check with the manufacturer. ONE® FlavorWaves® condoms contain an aromatic, non-toxic scent that is added to the lubricant on the condoms, so it does not contain any sweetener that would alter pH levels any differently than a standard condom. FlavorWaves are safe and intended for intercourse.

Can Condoms Affect Vaginal pH Balance?

Condoms are great for maintaining your pH balance. Because condoms act as a barrier between you and your partner(s), it reduces the direct skin-to-skin contact (with vaginal or anal tissue) that may impact pH.

For example, sperm is slightly alkaline in comparison to a more acidic vagina. Without a condom, sperm can skew vaginal pH up. This can result in pH imbalances and an increased risk for BV or UTIs.

As previously mentioned, additional ingredients like sugary flavors, spermicides or lubes can affect your pH balance, but the condoms themselves do not.

Fun fact: Lubricated condoms are most commonly lubricated with silicone-based lube. Because silicone does not contain water, it is pH neutral. This means silicone doesn’t impact pH. It is possible, however, to be allergic to silicone.

How to Choose a Condom for Your Sexual Needs

When choosing a condom, it is important to choose one that fits all of your needs and desires. Consider asking yourself: Do I need a latex or non-latex condom option? Should I try flavored condoms for oral or textured for pleasure? Do I want spermicides or condoms without spermicides? All of these are a great starting point to finding the best condom for you!

Conclusion

In conclusion, vagina-friendly is a broad term that often describes condoms that have body-safe ingredients and condoms that are cleared as a medical device under the FDA intended to prevent STIs and unintended pregnancy. Condoms go through rigorous safety testing. Therefore, there’s no condom by itself that would be considered “more safe” than another condom. However, there are sometimes additives that are applied to the condom, such as sugars that may impact pH or spermicide that may irritate vaginal tissue. People can also be allergic to latex condoms, or the lubricant on them. Here at ONE® we create condoms and lubricants with your body in mind using high-quality ingredients, triple testing for safety, and constantly innovating to deliver increasingly pleasurable experiences.

FAQs

Do all condoms have spermicide?

No. Not all condoms contain spermicide. To determine if your condoms contain spermicides, check out the box, it will be labeled and listed in the ingredients. ONE® Condoms do not contain any spermicide.

How effective are condoms?

Condoms are 98% effective at preventing STIs and pregnancy when used consistently and correctly. For added protection it is often recommended to pair condoms with another form of protection like an IUD or other birth control (for pregnancy prevention), or PEP or PrEP (for HIV prevention).

Can you be allergic to latex condoms?

Yes, you can have a latex allergy that prevents you from comfortably using latex condoms. A latex allergy can cause symptoms from mild irritation to severe breathing problems. If you begin to experience a reaction, stop using latex condoms immediately and contact a medical provider. Luckily, there are non-latex condom options that you can use to maintain your sexual health without a reaction. A person could also be allergic to the lubricant on condoms (most condoms are lubricated with silicone), which may also cause slight irritation or rashes. In that case, opt for a non-lubricated condom and apply your own lubricant.
