#DoItForCanada: ONE announces Top 50 Finalists for ONE Canada Design Contest

To celebrate Canada 150th, ONE® asked Canadians to rise to the challenge and design a condom wrapper for Canada. The ONE Canada Design Contest received hundreds of submissions from people across the country, and the Top 50 Finalists were announced for public voting at: onecondoms.ca/contest.

Design submissions included humourous wrappers, such as a beaver showing off its bottom with the text “Cheeky ONE,” maple syrup-themed wrappers with “Tap ONE,” a hockey design with “The Great ONE,” and all sorts of playful moose and witty takes on poutine. Additional designs included paintings and photography, representations of Indigenous culture, and plenty of designs that said “Sorry.”

A combination of voting by ONE® staff and a panel of eight guest judges helped select the Top 50 Finalist designs that are now available for public voting.

“There were so many amazing submissions, and I love how humour played a big role in the art. I was very proud to see the Indigenous culture represented in the designs and even more proud the designs were Canadian focused,” said contest judge Julie Thomas, a proud Mi'kmaq woman from Paq’tnkek First Nation in Nova Scotia and executive director of Healing Our Nations.

Dr. Laurie Betito, president of the Sexual Health Network of Quebec and director of the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center, said: “What an honour to have been chosen as a judge for ONE® Condoms, who have proven themselves to be a truly responsible company in terms of their community involvement and advocacy for safer sex practices. There were so many creative entries that it was hard to choose. Congratulations to all our designers!”

Dr. Carlen Costa said, “Being a judge for the ONE Canada Design Contest was a super fun and engaging experience! ONE Condoms makes the message about safer, consensual sex not only a priority, but they also make it an experience that people want to be a part of. Talking about condom negotiation can be challenging for some people; however, when you're working with a product like ONE condoms you not only want to play safely, you actually have some fun doing it, too.”

Now that the contest judges have voted, ONE is inviting the public in Canada to help vote for the final 10 winners. The public voting will be available at onecondoms.ca/contest through July 12th.

Each of the 10 final winners will receive a cash prize, a year’s supply of condoms featuring their winning artwork, an artist profile at onecondoms.ca, and a donation of up to 10,000 condoms to their Canadian health organization of choice. ONE will donate a total of 150,000 condoms to various Canadian organizations dedicated to promoting sexual health education and outreach.

“You did it, Canada! You designed hundreds of incredible condom wrapper designs to celebrate what it means to be ONE Canada,” said Davin Wedel, founder of ONE® Condoms. “From ‘Tap ONE’ to wild bears and beavers to messages about consent and love, together you helped start condom conversations across Canada.”

Condoms are the most effective way to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies. ONE was founded in 2004 with the core belief that if you put interesting and engaging artwork on condom wrappers, it helps start a conversation about the use of condoms and safer sex. ONE’s signature, circular condom wrappers feature hundreds of different designs and unique design collections.

In 2015, ONE partnered with celebrated New York street artists to create a condom collection to address the disproportionately higher rates of HIV in urban centres as part of its Lust for Life campaign. ONE has also helped to host local condom wrapper design contests in cities such as Los Angeles, as a way to promote positive engagement about sexual health. Most recently, ONE partnered with Toronto Public Health to launch the condomTO contest for the public to design the official Toronto Condom, and Ottawa Public Health for their Ottawa 2017 condom campaign.
