Evan Foster has been making a real impact at Appalachian State University. Already deeply involved with health promotion and sexual health education, he has taken his work to the next level as a ONE® College Ambassador. He's gained support on campus by improving access to ONE® condom products & educational training, and utilizing coordinator support that has allowed him to bring his ideas to life and reach even more students.

As a WECARE peer educator with Appalachian State’s Wellness and Prevention Services, Evan assists in coordinating impactful, student-centered sexual health programming, helping bring creative ideas to life with campus-wide conversation. In addition to helping lead large events, he also leads ongoing fun “Sex Ed 101” video series titled “Evan Time” on the department’s Instagram account, sharing facts about STIs and sexual health education that meet students where they are.

Project Condom Wet ‘n Wild

One of his biggest highlights on campus? The Western-themed Project Condom fashion show held last fall, which brought community, creativity, and safer sex education together. Held in partnership with the Appalachian State’s Wellness and Prevention Services and Campus Activities, the event tied in with the university's Homecoming theme, “Howdy Homecoming.” Student designers crafted bold, condom-based couture donated by ONE® Condoms Project Condom Program, hitting the runway and sparking meaningful conversations across campus.

A panel of five judges from the university and local community scored each design using a SHINE rubric (developed by Evan and fellow organizer and staff member Justin Parks) to highlight creativity, construction, innovation, and safer sex messaging. Between the condom couture looks, an internal condom demo, and a playful “Woody Race” condom application challenge, the night was packed with laughter and learning.  ONE® Condoms and OASIS also hosted outreach tables, offering free condoms, educational materials, and fun giveaways. To top it off, winners received prize baskets filled with ONE® goodies, making the evening both memorable and meaningful.

Beyond large scale campus-wide events, Evan plays a role in Appalachian State’s ongoing safer sex education and health promotion programming on campus throughout the academic year. 

Looking Ahead: April Events 

This April is a busy month on campus with several upcoming events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) packed with opportunities for students to engage, learn, and connect. Evan and his team are excited to bring these events to the Appalachian State community.

• April 1st: APPS Spring Fling— kicking off the month with the Appalachian Popular Programming Society (APPS) on Sanford Mall from 2:00–5:00 PM and stopping by the tables for safer sex resources.
  

• April 3rd: “From Ashes” Art Crawl– A SAAM-focused community art crawl in partnership with OASIS, Inc. and the Mountaineer Recovery Community.
  

• April 15th: Sex in the Dark– A no-holds-barred AMA-style Q&A panel where students can ask anonymous sexual health questions.
  

• April 21st: Take Back The Night— A ceremony of remembrance and activism supporting survivors of sexual assault.

We caught up with Evan to hear about his experience as a ONE® College Ambassador.  Here’s what he had to say: 

What advice would you give to a new ambassador who’s just getting started? 

“First, I would congratulate them on joining! This is a great opportunity to get involved on campus! My advice is that even if you get some negative pushback, that's okay! To me, that is a sign that you are doing something right! It can be uncomfortable at first, but it's important to keep trying! Something my coworker Hailey told me is that it is important to get comfortable being uncomfortable.”

Is there a specific event or moment that stands out as your favorite so far? Why?

“Great question! My favorite moment so far has to have been Project Condom last fall. It is such a unique event and we got to engage audiences we normally would not have been able to. We are super grateful to have been able to produce it and look forward to it again next fall!”

Evan’s journey shows what’s possible when passion for peer education meets the right support system. From creative campus-wide events to everyday conversations that reduce stigma, he’s helping build a culture of informed, inclusive sexual health at Appalachian State – and he’s just getting started.
